RACING’S MILLION DOLLAR EFFORT FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS
The Australian Thoroughbred Racing Industry has united throughout January in a million dollar effort to assist Australian aid the agencies with the Tsunami relief efforts.
Since New Year’s Day race clubs across Australia have been busy raising funds at race meetings and in a tremendous display of generosity the Australian Racing Industry, including sponsors, trainers, owners, breeders, jockeys, administrators and race goers themselves have contributed in excess of one million dollars to the Australian Racing Industry’s Tsunami Relief efforts.
“The diversity of our sport and its wide array of participants has seen a magnificent mix of generosity and ingenuity in the means of giving to the relief effort. These have included: breeders auctioning stallion service fees; race clubs signing over gate receipts from race days; jockeys contributing their winning purses; race clubs donating race sponsorship, sales of racing memorabilia; on-course collections, and the list goes on”said Chairman of the Australian Racing Board, Andrew Ramsden.
Australia Day (26 January) has been targeted as a further fundraising race day for the victims of the tsunami disaster.
“The industry has been involved in fundraising throughout the month – nevertheless we felt that it would be an appropriate statement of the industry’s sympathy for the victims of this disaster if racing on Australia’s national day was dedicated in this way”said Mr Ramsden.
Australian racing has longstanding and highly valued associations throughout the devastated regions.
“Our role in the Asia Racing Federation, the close links between the Western Australia Turf Club and Penang, and the Darwin Turf Club’s proximity to Indonesia, are but a few of those connections. It is only right that we do all we possibly can to assist in the relief of the many thousands who have been affected by this disaster”Mr Ramsden said.
